Previous Elections’ Problems Should Not Be Repeated: Abdullah

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday warned that there will be severe consequences for the country if the upcoming presidential elections are marred by fraud and irregularities like the previous polls.

“The transfer of power through people’s votes makes the fundamental part of the elections. God forbid, if the problems of previous elections are repeated, the country will be pushed into a major crisis,” added Abdullah.

On Tuesday, Abdullah visited a voter registration in Kabul to find his name on the voter list. In the same center, he hardly succeeded to find his name back in parliamentary elections last year in October.

“To avoid more problems, the commission should take some measures so that the people can find their names easily on the list… It shouldn’t be in a way that they search the whole list for their names,” he said.

Abdullah said that the Independent Election Commission has failed to bring reforms to the voter list.

He said that if someone was found guilty of trying to meddle in the election commission from the address of his office, his identity should be exposed, adding that he is fully aware of other complaints in the activities of the election commission.

The IEC chairperson Hawa Alam Nuristani vowed that complaints on the problems in voter registration process will be addressed.

Election observers said the commission so far has not done taken the required measures for the upcoming polls.

“The independent election commission has failed to outline a specific strategy to help overcome some suspicious cases or the controversial issues which were seen in the previous elections,” said Yusuf Rasheed, the CEO of Free And Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan.
